Immersive Travel Through Markets

VT Farmers markets info

Immersive travel is a buzz term these days (ok, it has been for a while now), and while there are multiple interpretations of what it can mean, they all come down to immersing oneself in the local culture. And I would argue that one of the best (and tastiest!) ways to learn about a culture is through its food; markets specifically.

Farmers markets (as well as craft markets and bazaars) are wonderful ways to get a sense of local culture and offer opportunities to meet/ interact with with locals. Throughout the world local growers and makers offer their wares to their communities at markets and so I proffer this: whenever you go to a new place, seek out the local markets. I've been to them everyplace I've had the opportunity to do so (from Asia to the Middle East to all the Americas, and Europe) and they have been a highlight of each and every trip. Can't speak the language? There are many operators that offer food tours or even food market tours -- TAKE ONE! Not planning any exotic or far-flung travel? Check out the farmer's market in a nearby town -- you'll see how things are different (or the same) and may have the opportunity to try something new and meet new people. (I have learned about new cheeses and salsas this way.) And you'll be supporting local every time: a very good thing.

For those coming to or living in Vermont, I have provided for you a map of the farmers markets and the times of operation, which I plan to integrate into my personal travel plans this summer. It is not hard to find this information in other areas thanks to the internet and search engines -- and I would recommend you look up when and where you can find markets near where you'll be. (Here's one for France which I found through a simple search.) Don't procrastinate -- go look up the ones in your area (or travel destination) NOW and keep a link to it (or print out) handy for reference. In my experience, days and times typically don't change from year to year -- locations do, though (even by season).

Obviously, it is not always feasible to visit local markets and it is not always practical to pick up local goodies to bring home. But just being out and about with locals brings you one step closer to immersing yourself and literally getting a taste of something different. We can all be better global citizens through shared knowledge and experience.

Happy travels my friends. I hope you have been inspired to add "visit local market(s)" to your travel to do list. And remember, knowledge is power!!
