March of 2021 brought us to several towns near the New Hampshire border which are the focus of this VT 251 exploration. Welcome to very rural Vermont, 5 more covered bridges, and one of my favorite breweries.
WINDSOR
Windsor, VT (pop. roughly 3,500 today) is considered the birthplace of Vermont. It is where the Constitution of Vermont was adopted in 1777, marking the founding of the Vermont Republic, a sovereign state until 1791, when Vermont joined the United States. There are plenty of historical buildings to see there from its different eras should you be interested, including the place where the Republic's constitution was signed. The Cornish-Windsor bridge spans the CT River and is the longest 2-span covered bridge in the world, and happened to be a toll bridge until 1943. Of non-historic interest in Windsor are the Harpoon Brewery (a GREAT spot for drinks and a bite) and the adjacent Path of Life (sculpture) Garden, complete with a bell to ring when you get to the middle of the maze. Interestingly, the Windsor Public Library not only lends out books, but you can also get non-genetically-modified seeds suited to its environment there! Should you be in the area and looking for a good hike, go to Mount Ascutney: the Windsor Trail is 2.7 miles to the summit with 2,514 feet of elevation gain and an overall 18% grade.
WEST WINDSOR
The Town of West Windsor, VT (population: 1,099) is set amid rolling pastures, woodlands, and small streams. In keeping with the town’s rural character, there was no town center we could find, and have I have since learned that ninety percent of the roads in town are unpaved, often lined with stonewalls and/ or mature trees.
WETHERSFIELD
Weathersfield, VT is another town in Windsor County on the west side of the Connecticut River and it has a population of 2,842 (as of 202o). There is an Inn in town (in the Perkinsville section of "town" to be precise, where the town center (ie church) is). Additionally there are three covered bridges to visit.
Moving right along!
